Day 128 November 22, 2010

Today i straightened the steering worm gear shaft, It is pretty straight now.It had a bad bend in it because the steering column tube was broken. Hard Hit? The new steering column tube, worm gears, gasket and wing bolts for the floor drains showed up today from John at Midwest Military. John had the wing bolt made to stock specs. Wes K. sent me a detailed layout of the steering assembly. Wes is part owner of Willy M Jeep Forum.
The steering box cover gasket was to small, My box casting number is a TA122985. Looking into this some more, the box is a late model casting used on the M38. The sector shaft pins measure out to 1.5" center to center for the m38 steering along with the worm gear shaft length of 42". I also found some info that this steering box might have been used on the early model M38A1 with a different steering ratio. Measuring across on the cover side of the box, center to center measures out to 4" 1/4".
